What are QR codes?
QR (Quick Response) code is a two-dimensional barcode originating with the Denso Wave corporation, a subsidiary of Toyota. QR codes are capable of storing considerably more data than a standard 1D barcode (up to 7089 numbers or 4296 characters). For comparison a standard EAN-13 can only hold 13 digits. QR codes were originally only used within the Japanese automotive industry but have since evolved for fulfill a variety of practical real world uses. Denso Wave declared it would not exercise its patent on QR codes and the world has been benefiting from them ever since.

Brand uses
Virtually every smartphone manufactured today is installed with a QR reader by default. Scanning a QR code saves users time spent manually entering a website url. Many businesses and brands take advantage of QR codes and the availability of smarphones for marketing campaigns or sharing product information. QR codes can be displayed on products, business cards, billboards, buses and even television broadcasts.
Dynamic QR Codes
A dynamic QR code is a QR code that encodes a url with a redirect. The destination url of a dynamic url can be changed at any time. This means a Dynamic QR code can be used over and over, saving on printing costs. This is ideal for seasonal promotions, sales event pages, menus. The QR code shown here can direct its users to different urls depending on the month of the year.
In October the short url reiqr.com/895 redirects to example.com/october-sales-event
In Winter the short url reiqr.com/895 now redirects to example.com/november-specials

Url based static and dynamic QR codes can be easily tracked using Analytics. This can be achieved by adding a query string to the destination url.
example.com/november-specials?2021nov
All the information after the ? is the query string and can be used to differentiate regular website visitors from visitors sent via your QR campaign. For more see this New Media Campaigns article on how to use query strings for campaign landing pages.
